Galen Natural Progression
The Galen Therapy Centre is pleased to introduce a new series of courses called Galen Natural Progression. This is a method of creating a balanced and fit dog that can fulfill their natural biomechancial function to the optimum, for health, longevity, and maximum mobility.
- Biomechanical function
- Synchronisation of the muscular system that will enable correct phasing of muscles to provide the stability of structure globally through the the dog to facilitate the appropriate foundation for sound and robust movement.
The Classes
The classes are intended to develop the structure in puppies/ adolescence / adults to provide the foundation for their future development in a way that replicates their own natural movement and development through different planes of movement that are often ignored. It does not involve the use of ‘tricks’, just balance exercises which promote co ordination and spatial awareness.
These classes are not obedience or agility classes, however, competitive or working dogs would benefit from these classes, as it can help them to develop healthy and robust structure to sustain the activities.
These courses are also being run in conjunction with the Galen Therapy Centre to assist appropriate conditions that are being treated with Myotherapy, to enhance recovery and show handlers exercises they can do to develop a more balanced dog.

The Rationale
The type of exercise a dog receives when it is a puppy is critical to its future growth. Due to their high energy levels, exercise of a young puppy (and young dog up to 18 months of age, depending of mature size) usually consists of activities to exhaust or wear out the puppy, so as to give you a quiet life. But, this type of high impact exercise can prove to have long term highly detrimental effects, often that are not apparently connected or immediately visible to the skeletal system.
Early development of strong core strength (musculo-skeletal stability and strength through the vertebrae) together with appropriate stability of the pelvic and shoulder assemblies, are paramount for reducing the cause of injury and exacerbating existing conditions. For example, a dog with laxity within its hips can be helped by receiving appropriate treatment and exercises that will develop the muscles that support the hip joint.
As dog handlers we have progressed hugely within all aspects of care and management of our dogs. Nutrition is now scientifically developed for all types of dog breed and age, Veterinary care is progressive and expansive; offering services and treatments once regarded as solely for human care and even exercise routines from 50-60 years ago have changed from roaming the streets to being transported by car for walks or shows. Muscular health, however and its implications have not developed in the same way and does not seem to be keeping up with the changes experienced by the canine. The environment that the dog now lives in is demanding and involves greater stresses upon a dogs musculo-skeletal system. The evidence is apparent through many, many cases of lameness both acute , chronic and worst of all not observed or treated.
