Does your dog lick or chew their feet and you cannot find out why? We are able to give you guided and supported help, for you to help your dog. We have set up this distance support to help you, wherever you are in the world!
As a specialist organisation dealing with the effects of chronic pain in dogs, we are often emailed or telephoned for advice. Whilst we are eager to help you, and passionate about improving the lives of dogs, this is so difficult as we cannot support you or your dog in an appropriate way via this method.
This has become so upsetting for all concerned, and in recent months we have seen a real demand for support. As such, we have set up the ‘Galen Distance Support Programme’ to try and help owners and their dogs.
This support could be really helpful for many types of conditions, but initially we are starting with the foot and body licking and chewing condition, that is very frequently so difficult to diagnose and therefore treat. IF HOWEVER, YOU FEEL WE CAN HELP YOU WITH OTHER ISSUES THEN PLEASE DO CONTACT US AND WE WILL ENDEAVOUR TO HELP.
The type of conditions we feel we can help.
One of the major problems we hear about is dogs that are constantly licking or chewing their feet and/or other parts of their body. Our distance support programme is directed towards these dogs and any other issue that you think we may be able to help with. Feet chewing and licking is often caused by a very specific type of referred pain that we feel we could help to manage. Have a look at FiFi; she suffered hugely from referred pain, and licking and chewing her feet was just one manifestation of this.

What will be involved?
There will be strict conditions, and in many cases we will request that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon to confirm that the treatment that you will be giving is appropriate.
It will also be dog specific, meaning that in no way will it enable or permit the recipient to treat dogs other than their own.
THIS IS A GENUINE EFFORT TO TRY AND HELP DESPERATE DOGS AND THEIR DESPERATE OWNERS – and we respectfully ask you not to abuse the knowledge that we shall be imparting to you.
How does it work?
Initially, you will be asked to sign onto the ‘Introduction and Assessment’. By doing this you will be paying £20 (or the equivalent) to have your dog assessed.
- We ask you to send in photographs of your dog, just like these below:
- We will also ask for details of any known conditions or issues your dog may have, to ascertain whether the techniques provided will be appropriate for them.
- We will then email you with our assessment of your dog, advising you of possible postural issues, areas of muscular tension etc.
If you are happy with this assessment you can then enrol onto the distance support programme itself. This will be at a further cost of £60 (or the equivalent), for the whole pack, including videos and support for 4 weeks. Your support can then continue with monthly instalments of £55 should you wish.
Your pack will contain:
- A disclaimer for you to sign and return.
- Information about chronic pain, why muscle pain is so extreme, and indicators of pain. .
- Full instructions of how and where (on your dog) to apply effectively; two massage techniques.
- Helpful hints to support your application.
- Video support relating to your techniques and your dog’s reaction.
- Information for your vet.
- After care advice.
- Videos of the techniques with full captions.
- Contraindications – (or when not to treat your dog).
- You will also have a chart to measure your dog’s improvement; and some of these results will go forward to a study to help other dogs.
You will have designated email contact with your dedicated Galen Myotherapist. They will view the videos you send through, and give advice and feedback on how you can improve your application.
This is not intended as a replacement for treatment BUT it can help to alleviate symptoms that can be so distressing and painful for the dog.
The techniques you will be shown and directed are superficial techniques. They will make a difference if applied correctly and are aimed at aiding symptomatic relief rather than addressing extreme postural changes. Therefore, changes you see to your dog will reflect this and will be slower than direct application of techniques by a professional therapist. However, by following the instructions and giving feedback to your remote therapist, you will still be able to influence, positively your dog’s health.
For these reasons, it is important to monitor the progress, however small the increments on your chart and to give feedback to your therapist so that she can help in as targeted way as possible.
It can also help your vet with a differential diagnosis; in other words help them to work out where the problems lies, especially if other clinical treatments are not providing improvement to the problem.
